Environmental policy is a planned course of action to manage human activities with a view to prevent, reduce, or mitigate harmful effects on nature or natural resources. This subject explores the nature of policy development and implementation and the cultural, environmental, political, legal and ethical issues that can influence the process. It provides an understanding of the policy making process, policy instruments and the skills necessary to analyse policies related to environmental management. There is no residential school associated with this subject. On completion students have an a in-depth understanding of the principles, processes, and complexity associated with environment policy.

  • understand the roles of key institutions and stakeholders involved with environmental policy
  • be able to critically appraise and apply a range of methods to evaluate public policy
  • be able to identify and make critical judgements about a range of policy instruments available to address environmental problems
  • critically understand how environmental policy relates to other areas of public policy

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to the nature of environmental policy: definitions, levels, examples
  • Policy development process: policy cycles, influences, outcomes
  • Policy implementation: mechanisms, influences, outcomes
