PSY559 Postgraduate Psychology International Experience (0)

Students enrolled in this subject will undertake a short program in an international setting. The program requires participation in psychology-focussed activities in another country, and involves engaging in studies of the culture, language and history, as well as studies related to the discipline and application of psychology. The program may include attendance at a conference in the destination country. The international experience may also include visits to sites of cultural and educational signficance, and intercultural engagment with local peers.

Enrolment Restrictions

Students must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree in professional psychology offered by the School of Psychology. The number of places available in this subject is limited, and a competitive selection process will be used to allocate these places.

PSY533 and PSY534

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an enhanced appreciation of cultural factors on human behaviour
  • be able to demonstrate a greater cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills
  • be able to recognise the importance of cultural understanding to psychological practice
  • be able to have a greater insight into their own attitudes and behaviour

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Orientation to the culture, language and history of the country
  • Visits to psychology-related organisations and cultural sites
  • Attendance at psychology-related educational activities

Special Resources

This subject requires students to spend a period of time in an overseas country. While students will be responsible for their own travel, accommodation and other expenses, the School will explore opportunities for external funding (e.g. Commonwealth Government programs) to minimise costs to students.
