SPH533 Entry Level Clinical Reasoning for Integrated Client Care in Speech Pathology (8)

In this subject students will consolidate integration of their knowledge and skills when working with clients with novel and complex communication and swallowing difficulties. Students apply knowledge to case studies which require clinical decision making, clinical reasoning and professional judgement with regards to complex client care situations. The cases require integration of students existing knowledge and skills with independently sourced knowledge of evidence-based speech pathology practice. Scaffolding will be provided to support students development of adaptability and professional responsibility in their speech pathology practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate professional responsibility in seeking and integrating new evidence-based knowledge and skills in response to clients with novel or complex communication and swallowing difficulties
  • be able to demonstrate ability to transfer knowledge, skills and attributes to novel and complex clients
  • be able to independently analyse and synthesise holistic client data and contextual information to identify and justify appropriate speech pathology management strategies
  • be able to independently integrate knowledge and skills with client data, contextual information and relevant current evidence regarding the assessment and management of clients with novel or complex communication and swallowing difficulties
  • be able to use clinical reasoning and communication skills appropriate to specialist and non-specialist audiences to discuss, document and report on speech pathology management with clients with novel and complex communication difficulties

  • Interdependent and advanced clinical decision making, clinical reasoning and professional judgement in complex cases
  • Adolescent and school-age stuttering, and telehealth
  • Profound hearing loss and attitudes
  • Global developmental delay and transdisciplinary practice
  • Aphasia and bilingualism
  • Motor neuron disease and service access
