THL335 Advanced Practical Theology (8)

This subject critically evaluates the methodologies of Practical Theology in the lived experience of the Church and provides an opportunity for students to engage with foundational texts of the discipline. Students will develop more complex theological reflection practices that demonstrate the interdisciplinary and transformative nature of Practical Theology as it informs ministry and mission.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the methodologies of Practical Theology;
  • be able to evaluate critically the work of significant contributors to the field of Practical Theology;
  • be able to demonstrate the application of a variety of theological praxis models;
  • be able to articulate and critically evaluate the relevance of other disciplines to practical theology, including Indigenous studies, gender studies and the social sciences; and
  • be able to demonstrate self-guided learning, including research, writing and communication skills relevant to the discipline of Practical Theology.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Critical Evaluation of the Praxis Models used in Practical Theology
  • Historical analysis of the evolution of Practical Theology in the Christian tradition
  • Biblical and Theological Foundations for Practical Theology
  • Exploration of contemporary ecclesial engagement with Practical Theology
