This subject engages critically with major figures and movements in the twentieth and twenty-first century theology, including authors in the four major fields of Protestant Theology, Catholic Theology, Contemporary Critical Theology and Contextual Theology. Students will engage critically with a selection of these theologies in relation to their contexts, tasks and methods.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a selection of contemporary theologies and the contexts in which they emerged
  • be able to evaluate critically selected theologies in reference to their contexts, tasks and methods
  • be able to discern and evaluate critically the contribution of particular theologies to their global and historical contexts
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a chosen contemporary theological figure or movement
  • be able to demonstrate independent research, and writing and communicaton skills

  • Protestant Theology: Schleiermacher; Liberal Theology and its Respondents; Theology and Culture
  • Catholic Theology: Neo-scholastic movement; Ressourcement; Theology post Vatican II
  • Contemporary Critical Theology: Liberation Theology; Feminist Theology; Ecotheology; Other Contemporary Theologies
  • Contextual Theologies: Indigeneous, Asian and PacificTheologies; Other Emerging Contextual Theologies
