This subject introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of theatre and media including the practical and theoretical aspects of staging live and mediated performances. Skills in collaboration and communication are developed and applied to the creation and production of site-specific performances using storytelling, rehearsal and ensemble training techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the principles of theatre-making and their relationship to media;
  • be able to apply theoretical knowledge of performance and storytelling in a small-scale site-specific event;
  • be able to evaluate and analyse performance processes and theory; and
  • be able to develop strategies for collaboration and problem-solving in a creative context.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The principles of theatre and media
  • Storytelling and dramatised storytelling in non-standard, outdoor, and purpose-built environments
  • Improvisation: role and role performance, framing and reframing dramatic contexts
  • Planning for live theatre and special event productions
  • Budgeting, scheduling, and marketing strategies

Special Resources

This subject requires access to the authentic learning spaces available through the School of Communication and Creative Industries at Bathurst campus. These include the Ponton Theatre and the production building 1454.
