TVP204 Outside Broadcast Production (8)

This subject investigates the theoretical and practical approaches to outside broadcast (OB) production. A significant proportion of television production is created on location necessitating the use of a mobile outside broadcast facilities. This subject is designed specifically to explore this industry practice. The student learning will cover the planning, design, validation, organisation, execution and deconstruction process of an outside broadcast. Students will actively participate in a series of exercises replicating industry standards and utilising skills initiated from the Syllabus.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to compile, produce and distribute the outside broadcast Production Manual;
  • be able to validate and be conversant with the technology and resources chosen to produce an outside broadcast;
  • be able to undertake the design and planning process of an outside broadcast;
  • be able to organise and liaise with authorities and stakeholders, and source required permissions;
  • be able to demonstrate and execute a thorough site OH&S examination and implement a suitable Risk Management plan;
  • be able to implement a pre-production plan and schedule of an outside broadcast;
  • understand and identify the hierarchy of pertinent roles of an outside broadcast crew; and
  • be able to deconstruct the production after the conclusion of an outside broadcast.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • OHS and Risk Management;
  • Preproduction of an outside broadcast;
  • Liaising with authorities and stakeholders;
  • The hierarchy of an outside broadcast crew;
  • Technology and resources;
  • The outside broadcast Production Manual;
  • Planning an outside broadcast;
  • The outside broadcast Production day; and
  • The outside broadcast Debrief.

Special Resources

This subject utilises the Charles Sturt University Outside Broadcast Facility and will include situated learning experiences on client generated projects that may require short-term student travel. Where travel is required this is typically facilitated through university busses or other transport with costs met from the production budget (typically sourced externally).
