VPA114 Experimental Film (8)

This subject introduces students to the history and cultural impact of experimental and abstract screen media, including non-narrative structures, non-representational subjects, and experimentation within materials, form, process and narrative functions. The influence of creative, industrial and social movements on the emergence of experimental film will be covered. Through theory and practical experiments students will explore non-traditional film practices and moving image works made for exhibition in a gallery context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse non-traditional non-narrative construction;
  • be able to apply non-linear narrative structures in a written or practice-based work;
  • be able to analyse the impact of technology and media on experimental film practice and theory;
  • be able to engage in discourse on historic and contemporary experimental film;
  • be able to analyse new media and gallery neo-film experimental works; and
  • be able to develop content that demonstrates technical and aesthetic skills and understanding of experimental film strategies.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Artists and animation pioneers: Dada, Surrealism, and Abstraction
  • Machinism and Interwar Propaganda: experiments in technique and narrative form
  • Distribution and curation: the birth of an industrial standard
  • Material experimentation
  • Rhythm, Visual Music, and Sensory Cinema
  • Non-narrative 1 - cinema as conceptual art
  • Non-narrative 2 - editing and the long take
  • Defining the genre(s) - cinema and art gallery
  • Projection and environmental art/situated media: contemporary practice
  • Politics and Encoded Media: eastern bloc animations
  • Informing mainstream screen media/ Abstract as special effect
  • Screendance
