VPA216 Interactive Sound and Space (8)

This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of interactive audio and sound in the environment. The subject explores the creation of microphones, virtual environments, acoustics, and how sound is perceived. Students will learn about natural reverbs and how to create artificial reverbs that can be translated into practical applications. These skills will enable students the opportunities to create virtual interactive sound.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge in the use of audio hardware for sound acquisition;
  • be able to demonstrate and apply knowledge in the use of audio software for sound editing and interactive presentation;
  • be able to create, replicate and synthesise virtual and acoustic spaces; and
  • be able to create a virtual sound environment.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • What is sound?
  • Principles of acoustics
  • Interactive sound application
  • Reverberation and Delays
  • Aquiring, editing and preparing sound for interactive playback
  • Simple circuits (electronic and virtual)
  • Building a microphone
