CSU Admission Policy

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

For entry to the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics applicants are required to have completed an undergraduate degree or a teaching qualification. Applicants must also have studied, within the last 10 years, a high school mathematics subject that includes calculus (for example HSC Mathematics or VCE Mathematical Methods. HSC General Mathematics or equivalent is not sufficient), OR have completed a university level mathematics subject which includes calculus (such as MTH105) which is deemed by the Course Coordinator to be equivalent.

Students who attempt the subject EPT442 will need to undergo a police check.

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

Applicants without a tertiary qualification may be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Mathematics on the basis of professional attainment and/or work experience in a scientific or quantitative environment. Applicants must also have studied, within the last 10 years, a high school mathematics subject that includes calculus (for example HSC Mathematics or VCE Mathematical Methods. HSC General Mathematics or equivalent is not sufficient), OR have completed a university level mathematics subject which includes calculus (such as MTH105) which is deemed by the course coordinator to be equivalent.

CSU Credit Policy

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

Teaching Focused Students who have a secondary teaching qualification in another discipline may be eligible for two subject credits if they do not have ambitions to become a Head or Lead Teacher in Mathematics. These credits are in the form of Two Unspecified Electives (subject code XYZ02C) and can only be used towards two of the restricted elective subjects in the course. Alternatively, instead of one of these credits, a student can choose to complete EMM442 if they would like to study an additional math methods subject.

Secondary teachers may be eligible for proficiency credit for EPT442, based on professional experience if they fulfil the following conditions. They must be employed as a full-time teacher in mathematics in a secondary school for at least one term during the past four years. During this period they must have taught across years 7-12 with an 80% teaching load in mathematics. A Stage 6 class must be included in the teaching load for the term.

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

The Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

Enrolment Pattern

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

Due to the flexible nature of the course there is no prescribed enrolment pattern. However students need to have successfully completed both MTH101 and MTH102 to be able to study most of the higher level mathematics subjects. When planning their enrolment students need to be aware of prerequisite requirements and the availability of subjects.

It may be possible to complete the course in one year but for most students the course would take at least 18 months.

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

For most students the course will take at least 2 years.

For those students studying the course to add mathematics as a second teaching area or to retrain from primary to secondary mathematics, EMM441 and EPT442 are compulsory restricted electives.

Teaching Focused Students who choose to study two subjects a session and start in session 1, are advised to select EMM441 as the restricted elective first session and MTH419 in their second session.
