ACT121 Actor Training (8)

In this subject students are introduced to a range of theoretical and practical approaches to acting, researching and practicing acting systems and methodologies in order to begin developing a personal approach to their craft. Commedia dell'arte is used as a focal point for technique and the basis for scene work performances and students apply a chosen acting technique to a screen duologue.

Assumed Knowledge

It is assumed that students will have undertaken some fundamental acting or performance based learning prior to undertaking this subject equivalent to ACT120 and/or ACT101.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and apply an understanding of what is meant by 'actor training';
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge of various acting systems and their basic principles;
  • be able to independently and collaboratively research into one or more actor training pedagogies;
  • be able to demonstrate the application of acting techniques in performance;
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate actor training techniques for both stage and screen contexts; and
  • be able to demonstrate a capacity to work effectively and cooperatively in groups and be able to take direction.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of the major acting systems and dramatic terminology
  • Introduction to a range of acting systems
  • Applying learned processes to scenes and improvisations
  • Scene work and advanced integrated vocal and movement skills
  • Advanced awareness and use of space
