APS508 Extended Care Clinical Management (8)

This subject builds on the students' knowledge and experience as a paramedic as a number of clinical situations are contextualised to the extended care paramedic setting. During this subject the student will learn about analgesia and sedation, trauma, mental health, infections, wound care management, and palliative care. This subject will address these topics with a focus on primary health care patient assessment, treatment, case management and identification of transport, referral or field care options.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to apply a complex knowledge of the pharmacology of analgesia and sedation to the safe and effective provision of extended care interventions.
  • Be able to apply a knowledge of pharmacology to the safe and effective selection and administration of medications for commonly encountered infections in the extended care paramedic setting.
  • Be able to implement safe and appropriate patient assessment, therapeutic intervention, and management strategies derived from current evidence based knowledge to mental health care in the extended care paramedic setting.
  • Be able to implement safe and appropriate patient assessment and management strategies derived from current evidence based knowledge to palliative care in the extended care paramedic setting.
  • Be able to make informed and safe clinical decisions based on a knowledge of the pathophysiological processes of trauma conditions and commonly encountered infections in the extended care paramedic setting.
  • Be able to apply a complex and current knowledge of advanced wound care management principles as applicable to extended care paramedics.
