ASC142 Equestrian Coaching (8)

ASC142 develops practical riding instruction and coaching skills in equestrian sports.  The function of this subject is to develop and establish skills required to coach juniors, adult and senior riders from basic beginners through to higher levels competition. Emphasis is placed on safe coaching practice, following established development pathways that are tailored to individual and group coaching situations. This subject includes all of the requirements set out in the Equestrian Australia National Coaching accreditation scheme plus extra material. Students who are interested in non Olympic disciplines may pursue their discipline of interest. For those students studying by distance education, this subject includes a compulsory 4 day residential school.

Enrolment Restrictions

Enrolment restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Applied Science (Equine Studies) Courses.
Each student enrolled in this subject must be capable of riding at the minimum level prescribed in the Equestrian Australia Introductory riding certificate. Each student must have a horse and equipment suitable for instruction, demonstrations and for participation in practical coaching sessions as required at each residential school.

ASC148 and ( ASC106 or ASC206 ) and ASC248

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to competently assess the stage of development of riders
  • Be able to present a planned and structured coaching session appropriate to the development of the rider(s) being coached that is relevant to the chosen equestrian sports
  • Be able to conduct a safe riding session appropriate to the standard of riders and horses.
  • Be able to assess and manage the risk associated with presenting an equestrian coaching session at a particular venue and client.
  • Be able to plan a short term development program appropriate to an identified rider.

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

Residential Schools will be conducted in 1x4 day session. The residential school may be conducted outside the standard residential school period. Students attending the residential school must have the use of a horse suitable to paticipate in individual and group coaching sessions.

Students are required to provide a suitable horse to demonstrate riding skills and to participate in practical coaching sessions during the residential school
