ASC380 Professional Practice (8)

This subject allows students to experience first-hand the requirements of working in industry and to develop a realistic understanding of the expectations placed upon workers within legal and practical contexts.  During this subject  important factors that shape the equine industry will be evaluated and their effect on industry practice appraised.  This subject includes reflection and assessment of the (required) extramural workplace learning that students have undertaken. On successful completion of this subject students will have engaged in  personal career goal setting and produced a personal development plan, that will be met in part through working within the equine industry.

This subject is specific to the Bachelor of Equine Science and Bachelor of Equine Science (Business Management).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to justify their own and the behaviour of others in terms of industry ethics in relation to horse welfare and human safety;
  • be able to identify and critically appraise personal and professional skills and career goals;
  • be able to develop and demonstrate effective autonomous and team working skills;
  • be able to problem solve within the industry context in the light of limitations and opportunities including Indigenous competency and as custodians of the environment;
  • be able to tailor communications to different audiences as appropriate; and
  • be able to assemble a workplace learning and professional development portfolio to an appropriate professional standard showing development, progression and reflective evaluation throughout.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Industry ethics and expectations.
  • Horse welfare and human safety.
  • Environmental influences and stewardship.
  • Career planning, skills development, goals and objectives setting.
  • Professional development: communication skills, Australian Indigenous competency, professional practice, self-evaluation and reflection.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students are required to undertake a total of 20 days of extramural placement, divided into 2 x 10 day blocks, within businesses approved by CSU.  During these placements students are expected to be actively engaged in work activities for no less than seven hours per day.

Special Resources

Students will be required to undertake 20 days of extramural WPL for which they will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.
