BMS231 Biomedical Science for Nurses 1 (8)

This subject covers the anatomy and physiology of the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It also provides an introduction to pharmacokinetics.

No offerings have been identified for this subject in 2019.

Where differences exist between the Handbook and the SAL, the SAL should be taken as containing the correct subject offering details.

  • demonstrate a basic knowledge of pharmacokinetics
  • describe the structural and functional organisation of the nervous system
  • demonstrate an understanding of membrane physiology as it relates to the nervous system
  • identify the cellular and gross structure of the central nervous system including meninges, cerebrospinal fluid and blood supply
  • discuss the organisation of the sensory, motor and integrative systems of the nervous system
  • describe the structure and function of selected special senses
  • describe the structure and function of the autonomic nervous system and relate this to homeostasis
  • demonstrate an understanding of neurological disorders in relation to structure and function
  • identify blood components and their functions
  • detail the structure and function of the heart
  • relate an electrocardiogram to electrical events in the heart and appreciate its uses
  • understand the cardiac cycle and appreciate the maintenance of cardiac output
  • discuss the structure and function of the vascular system and relate this to blood pressure
  • discuss the role of the lymphatic system and its contribution to immunity
  • discuss stress, shock and the maintenance of homeostasis
  • describe the structure and function of the respiratory system
  • describe the physiology of gaseous exchange
  • discuss the factors affecting respiration and the respiratory system
