Examines in detail three major areas of medical physiology. Each area draws together systems physiology and describes the pathophysiology, assessment and treatment options. The emphasis is on how to utilise an understanding of these areas in clinical applications.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the characteristics, transport and mode of action of hormones;
  • identify different types of receptors;
  • explain the up or down regulation of receptors;
  • understand the clinical assessment of hormones in endocrine pathophysiology (eg. diabetes, infertility, hyperthyroidism) and the basis of their therapies;
  • discuss hormone abuse and its sideeffects;
  • describe the inflammatory response and process of tissue repair;
  • understand the pathophysiology of selected cardiovascular disorders;
  • discuss the basis for diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, arrhythmias, cardiac failure, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism and cerebrovascular accident;
  • utilise appropriate terminology to discuss the basis of clinical oncology;
  • understand the processes of neoplasia and metastasis;
  • describe the diagnosis, staging and clinical assessment of tumours; and
  • discuss conventional and novel therapeutic strategies covering chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeting, hyperthermia and surgery.
