BMS505 Intellectual Property & Regulation of Biotechnology (8)

This subject will cover the rules and legislation concerning intellectual property, patent applications and the regulatory bodies associated with biotechnology research. Part of the subject will cover the prerequisite work required to file a patent application. The theory will use the Australian situation as a base with assessment items comparing the laws and regulations between Australia and other countries. Overseas students will ideally compare the Australian situation with the situation in their own country.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Understand the process involved in regulating recombinant DNA technology including use of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and human gene therapy.
  • Appreciate the role of organisations such as the Therapeutic Goods Administration, Office of the Gene technology Regulator in the commercialisation of biotechnology research.
  • Understand the range of IP associated with biotechnology including patents, trade marks, designs, plant breeders rights, copyright and trade secrets.
  • Describe and understand the processes associated with the patenting of biotechnology inventions including patent searching.
  • Understand the role of good research management and laboratory practice in the commercialisation of biotechnology research.
  • Understand the processes of due diligence.
