CLS204 Clinical Placement and Authentic Learning is a healthcare workplace learning subject. Students are required to complete block clinical placements in the healthcare environment. In this subject, students will be required to apply paramedic level basic life support and advanced life support skills in a supervised clinical environment. Specific protocols, procedures and pharmacologies are detailed in the subject outline and the associated assessment items. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to carry out intermediate clinical skills under supervision.
  • Be able to perform an intermediate patient assessment
  • Be able to identify and reflect on ethical and legal issues that arise on placement.
  • Be able to show sensitivity towards individual and cultural differences by identifying and dealing with areas of potential distress while working with patients in a clinical setting.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Communication and cultural sensitivity.
  • Application of clinical skills.
  • Developing as a professional.
  • Application of legal and ethical frameworks in a clinical setting.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 40 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Clinical experience is a compulsory and important part of the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic). Students will need to complete block clinical placements (with varying shifts of 10, 12 and 14 hours) in the ambulance and healthcare environment. Students will have several work place sites available in NSW, ACT and Tasmania to select from.  Students will need to demonstrate competency in a variety of different clinical skills and tasks in order to successfully complete this placement. Set workplace learning times are given to students to complete the hours of placement.

Students need to ensure that adequate preparation has been completed in order for the delivery of safe and effective patient care. All pre-requisite subjects must be successfully completed prior to undertaking workplace learning.

Special Resources

This subject is a healthcare work place learning subject. Students are required to complete blocks of clinical placement in the healthcare environment. Students will be responsible for all costs associated with this work place learning subject.

Students will be asked to select from several ambulance placement sites in which to take part in their ambulance workplace placement. Students will be required to travel to their placement site, and sites are located in New South Wales, ACT and Tasmania. Students will need to wear their placement uniform (purchased), helmets (supplied), safety vests (supplied), and safety glasses (purchased). Students will need to evidence appropriate immunisation, first aid certificate, a criminal record clearance and where appropriate, working with children check.
