In this subject students explore new models of media creation, distribution and consumption and their impact on the communication industries. Students will research audiences and markets and develop projects using social and mobile media channels as a publication path. Students will engage with major controversies and issues around the role of social networking sites in society and consider the ethical implications of social networking platforms.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to research and critically assess the impact of social media on the communication industries;
  • be able to work individually and collectively to create and distribute text, graphics, video and audio using social and mobile media;
  • be able to apply production, development and teamwork skills to work in small creative teams to conceive and produce media projects for distribution using social and mobile media;
  • be able to critically reflect on appropriate research and evaluation methodologies for defining and working with social media audiences; and
  • be able to assess the ethical implications of major social networking platforms.

Special Resources

Students will require media creation and production equipment such as a mobile phone capable of recording and posting content to the internet.
