CUS410 Customs Field Education - Practice (16)

 In this subject the emphasis will be on the practical day to day activity of customs officers and current domestic practice/legislation. Students will transition knowledge and skills gained from earlier subjects in the course from the international law basis, upon which these subjects have been founded, to their own domestic law and practice under supervision.By reflective practice students will apply and integrate their existing technical knowledge and skills to their workplace and further develop their technical and non-technical communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an informed understanding of the role of customs and their environment;
  • be able to critically assess the challenges faced by customs in the delivery of their services;
  • be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the policy responses of government to customs issues;
  • be able to analyse, interpret and practically apply international (principles and best practice)and national developments affecting border integrity and security applicable to their own customs jurisdiction;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of international organisations, treaties and conventions on their own customs jurisdiction; and
  • be able to identify and detail current domestic practice/legislation and communicate the results to others.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Under the supervision of a dedicated supervisor/mentor the student will select a series of existing customs practices/procedures in their administration and prepare a portfolio of practice statements.
