DOH254 Foundations of Dental Clinical Practice 2 (16)

This subject will continue the development of basic dental diagnostic and clinical management skills related to both simple restorative (operative) and periodontal procedures in the clinical dental environment. Students will learn differential diagnosis of simple oral conditions and the management of simple restorative and periodontal procedures in the clinical dental environment. There will be a focus upon associated dental processes, the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of caries and periodontal diseases are presented in lecture and discussion sessions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the aetiology and differential diagnosis of common oral conditions;
  • be able to explain the basic clinical procedures involved in the examination of the dental patient, including history, exam and diagnosis;
  • be able to apply foundation knowledge of oral condition, and basic clinical procedures in a clinical environment;
  • be able to describe the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of dental caries; and
  • be able to describe the aetiology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and immunopathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Comprehensive oral examination;
  • Introduction to clinical practice;
  • The preclinical development of technical skills and understanding the importance in relation to periodontal disease management;
  • Periodontal tissues and periodontal disease;
  • Cariology;
  • Non-carious tooth loss; and
  • Oral radiology (principles, techniques and interpretation).

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 12 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Workplace Learning involves sessions in the clinical environment 6 hours per week over 12 weeks.

Special Resources

Dental pre-clinical simulation resources are required for this subject including equipment purchased by the students.
