EEB308 Teaching Adult Numeracy in VET (8)

This subject employs the central concepts, modes of enquiry, and structure of the content of numeracy to enable students to develop teaching and assessment strategies in VET contexts. Students will learn to analyse and understand the numeracy demands associated with the study of VET and apply numeracy concepts to their teaching in ways that are relevant, enjoyable and meaningful for learners.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss the purposes and functions of numeracy in the community with particular reference to students in the VET sector;
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the numeracy discipline and use this understanding in their teaching;
  • be able to discuss a constructivist approach to numeracy teaching;
  • be able to interpret and explain numeracy concepts and processes embedded within a variety of VET contexts;
  • be able to develop teaching and assessment strategies and resources that address the numeracy demands of VET disciplines that acknowledge the numeracy levels of students; and
  • be able to evaluate the effectiveness of their numeracy teaching and modify their strategies constructively.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The numeracy discipline
  • The nature and role of numeracy
  • Attitudes to numeracy
  • The relationship between literacy and numeracy and the integration of these in teaching contexts in VET
  • Numeracy concepts and processes
  • Analysing the numeracy knowledge embedded in the various VET disciplines
  • Analysing the numeracy skills of students
  • Strategies for teaching numeracy
  • Critical analysis and evaluation of the resources available for numeracy teaching and the matching of these to particular student groups
