EEB443 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Cultural Education Program (0)

The subject, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Cultural Education Program, has been designed to facilitate opportunities for students in the Bachelor and Master of Teaching degrees to develop respectful relationships with their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community through a minimum of 15 hours of participation in a placement in a local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisation or an authorised cultural immersion program.
The local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community cultural education experience is part of the cultural competence program embedded within the degree and allows for authentic engagement with the community to broaden students understanding of issues confronting the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and to further understand the role of education in achieving reconciliation and improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Assumed Knowledge

Students can enrol in EEB435 or EEB505 in the same session as EEB443 however, students should complete the subject EEB435 or EEB505 before commencing the 15 hour community education placement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to successfully complete a minimum of 15 hours placement hours with a Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisation or authorised cultural immersion program; and
  • be able to reflect on their experience in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community cultural education program using and the Australia Professional Standards for Teaching Graduates standard to annotate strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and describe the importance of relationships and community engagement can promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Protocols for working and engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities
  • Working towards demonstrating evidence of Graduate Teacher Standards 1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students & 2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
  • The value of community learning and training in Indigenous cultural competence
  • Exploration of how learning and teaching are conducted in settings other than schools
  • The importance of working and engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 15 hours Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

15 hours of participation in a placement in a local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisation or an authorised cultural emersion program.
