In this subject, students will critically examine the history and significance of elite and professional sport in Australia. Beginning with the emergence of international competition in the late nineteenth century, students will explore the evolution and development of Australian sport at national and international levels.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the emergence of Australian sport at a national and international level;
  • be able to articulate the connection between Australian national identity with international sporting success;
  • be able to identify the historical significance of the club system of sport in Australia;
  • be able to critically discuss the historical factors relevant to the emergence of male and female professional team sports in Australia;
  • be able to critically examine the history and culture of sports gambling and gaming in Australia; and
  • be able to articulate the role and significance of Australia's participation in major sporting events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • the emergence of Australia's sporting identity from the late nineteenth century;
  • the importance of the club system in Australia's international success;
  • the meaning and significance of Australian sporting success at an international level;
  • the history of gambling and gaming in sports and the impact of this on Australian sport;
  • Australia's participation in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games;
  • the rise of professional team sports in Australia; and,
  • the recent emergence of women's professional team sports in Australia.
