EHR303 Contemporary Issues in Physical Activity (8)

This subject will enable students to develop knowledge of pertinent and contemporary issues in physical activity, sport and recreation in education and in the sports industry both in Australia and globally. Students are provided with a range of theoretical tools with which to critically analyse issues and to develop a strong appreciation of the complex place of physical activity in society. Students evaluate sources of knowledge related to physical activity and sport and further develop skills in critical thinking. In addition, students will explore, assess and evaluate the relationship between theory and current issues in their preferred field. Some issues dealt with include ethics, gender, Indigeneity, religion, drugs, race, traditional sporting practices and the emergence of youth cultures in physical activity.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to utilise theories as tools to critically examine current issues in physical activity, such as issues of gender, race and religion, socialisation through sport, violence and deviance in sport and the future of sports;
  • be able to collect, synthesise and evaluate sources of information;
  • be able to critique the ways in which knowledge about physical activity influences the teaching of, and narratives surrounding, physical activity and sport;
  • be able to integrate relevant information and to effectively communicate their opinions;
  • be able to examine the origins and significance of personal biases when evaluating sources of information and forming opinions;
  • be able to critically evaluate the challenges, barriers and enablers of participating in exercise and sport to inform culturally safe practice;
  • be able to identify and respond to issues surrounding sustainability related to the global sports industry.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

- Discussing the five most commonly used theories in physical activity (ie. functionalist theory, critical theory, feminist theories, interactionist theories, and conflict theory);
- A discussion on critical reading and thinking skills;
- Sport, socialisation and school sport;
- Gender issues in physical activity;
- Violence and deviance in sport;
- Race, ethnicity and religion in physical activity;
- Drugs in sport;
- Internationalism, globalisation and sport as big business;
- Sport, the body and identities;
- Sport and the environment;
- Sport and social division;
- The future and politics of sports.
