This subject aims to enhance student understanding of current research and practice in applied sport and exercise psychology. It introduces students to a range of psychological interventions currently being used by 'mental' coaches and sport psychologists to improve the performance, satisfaction and personal growth of athletes and exercise participants, including goal setting, relaxation and energising techniques, imagery, mental rehearsal, self-talk and concentration control. Psychological skills such as motivation, confidence, self-awareness, concentration and arousal management that are applicable to coaches, sport psychology specialists, physical educators, sport scientists, sports journalists, sports administrators, exercise leaders, coaches, athletes and exercisers, are also covered.
