EMA410 Teaching and Assessing the Creative Arts (8)

In this subject students will build an understanding of the processes of planning and assessing creative arts with young children through working with a child in the early years of school. They will consider the intent of both the K-2 Creative Arts syllabus and the EYLF. Students will observe, analyse and plan for and with a child to provide appropriate developmental learning activities for the child. Through this task, students will demonstrate their understandings of various theoretical perspectives that inform arts education, and critically analyse their observations. To extend their understanding of the assessment of the arts, they will access a variety of samples of children's work on line, and analyse the information about the child's learning available in the samples. They will then apply backward mapping processes to consider appropriate strategies for teaching the outcomes in the arts syllabus documents in child centred classrooms. Students will use ICT tools to present their understanding of assessing and planning for arts learning.

This subject explores and uses the constructivist learning environments described by Howland, Jonassen & Mara (2012).  Students' understanding in this subject will follow processes of scaffolded learning. The two assessment tasks are the culmination of processes of learning undertaken in the weekly classes. Students will be using tools of technology to record their progressive work and document their learning and those of the school children with whom they will engage on their Professional Experience. Online environments will be used to archive and arrange their artefacts of learning. Weekly, students will engage in a 2 hour workshop, followed by a 1 hour lecture to collectively reflect on the outcomes of their learning
