Quality training and assessment requires practitioners to have a thorough understanding of the Australian Vocational Education and Training system. This subject explores the theoretical, regulatory, and practical factors that influence training. Needs assessment, learning and assessment design, evaluation of training, and a range of other current issues are addressed at a critical level. This subject assumes background knowledge of content covered in the TAE Certificate IV in Training & Assessment and experience working within the context of Australian Qualifications Framework Training Packages.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the vocational training system and their own contextualised practitioner role within it;
  • be able to explain the systems approach to training and how the development and use of Training Packages relates to this approach;
  • be able to explain the principles of a learning analysis, including the conduct of a training needs analysis;
  • be able to explain the principles of learning design, including the planning of appropriate training strategies and the development of learning tools;
  • be able to explain the principles of assessment, including assessment and recognition pathways, assessment plans, strategies and tools; and
  • be able to explain the principles of training evaluation.
