EPI203 Metal Technology: Workshop & Design (8)

This subject provides students with the opportunity to develop introductory workshop knowledge and skills and safety procedures in the use of metal as a material for the secondary school context. An emphasis on design as it relates to Industrial Technology metal projects is also an important part of the subject.

Students will consider how these skills and concepts relate to technology teaching in the secondary school. They will engage in school metal workshop projects and receive advice and demonstration of teachers' practice including issues related to Work Health and Safety (WHS) in the TAS teaching environment. They will report on these aspects of teaching to develop an applied understanding of safety, pedagogy and design, to ensure a safe technology classroom environment and consider how this supports their development as effective technology teachers. They will build on these understandings through assessment items that link theory and practice in this technology area.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to competently use hand tools and power tools in a metal based workshop;
  • be able to develop and put into practice WHS procedures in a metal workshop;
  • be able to discuss workshop practice in relation to school workshop safety;
  • be able to apply metal technology skills content to educational goals with an emphasis on a design; and
  • be able to discuss their development as effective and safe technology teachers.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Workplace communication and safety
  • Metal as a material and metal techniques
  • Hand skills and operating equipment
  • Reading, interpreting and creating plans and specifications
  • Classroom teaching, metal technologies, management and safety
  • Design in Industrial Technology metal projects

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school is designed to enable students to develop and demonstrate their ability to safely use a range of metal working tools and equipment through the completion of practical projects.

Special Resources

The University does not provide specialised resources; instead, we use specialised resources in secondary schools in the form of tools, equipment and workshops. Students are expected to contribute towards consumables for projects they create and keep.
