EPT221 Professional Experience 3 Early Childhood Programs: Birth - 2 Year Olds (8)

This subject offers students opportunities to observe, plan, implement and reflect upon experiences for children birth - two years of age. Students will consult with families and other primary caregivers to address individual capacities of children birth  two years in group settings and respond positively to family and community cultures in caregiving and education practices. This subject takes an ecological approach to exploring the interactions between young children and the environment in which they live. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the implementation of quality environments and leadership in birth  two educational settings. The professional experience aspect of this subject is designed to take into account students' previous birth  two subject content. The placement will take place over a period of 20 days.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of a professional philosophy;
  • be able to demonstrate the pedagogy required for teaching very young children and gain the competency and interpersonal skills required;
  • be able to discuss the relationship between the experiences of a group of young children and their homes, early childhood services and areas in which they live;
  • be able to use reflective practice skills to review their teaching philosophy;
  • be able to demonstrate skills in planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating experiences for very young children in the context of baby and toddler group care and education;
  • be able to justify and reflect upon their pedagogical decisions in light of their understanding of quality baby and toddler environments, diverse learners, rural contexts and leadership;
  • be able to demonstrate caregiving as curriculum;
  • be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal engagement with professional stakeholders including child care staff, parents, families and the community;
  • be able to abide by the regulations and quality assurance systems that apply to settings for very young children.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to Professional Experience - information on placement, organisation,
  • The roles of the Associate Teacher, Subject Coordinator and University Liaison Person
  • Understanding the contexts of services for children birth to 2 - developing a service
  • Documenting child learning and observations of children - ways of recording teaching and learning, using observations to plan, links to specific theories of curriculum planning
  • Planning and programming in early childhood services - understanding the different formats and thinking about planning learning environments for young children, indoor, outdoor, freeplay, individual and whole group experiences
  • Gaining knowledge of setting up engaging and intellectually challenging inclusive learning environments for young children
  • Guiding behaviour - understanding behaviour and management strategies, developing a supportive environment for children
  • Review personal and professional attributes required of quality teachers through development of Professional Experience goals

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

A guided professional experience placement in a Birth - 2 years setting.
