EPT447 Professional Experience: Positive Primary Classroom Environments (8)

This subject introduces students to positive classroom environments through online study with an embedded classroom experience focus. The professional experience component consists of 25 days of supervised placement in a Primary K-2 or 3-6 setting comprising of five lead in days and a four week block. Students will apply their learning from the online modules while under the professional supervision of a practising classroom teacher. They will develop and apply their knowledge of a range of appropriate classroom management strategies to their professional practice as they design, implement and evaluate context appropriate lessons in key learning areas. They will apply strategies that promote positive relationships within the classroom, as well as begin to apply strategies to manage student behaviour. Students will also provide evidence of their progression in developing competence across the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a Graduate level.

Enrolment Restrictions

This subject is available to students entered into the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) and Master of Teaching (Primary) courses.

The first placement subject should not be before the eighth subject studied in the course. On commencing the first placement, students should have completed a minimum of the first four subjects in the course and be in enrolled in three other subjects in the same session as EPT447.

This subject has the following prerequisite requirements: EED422 and EML440 and (EMM418 or EML439 or EMA410 or EMS406 or EMR408 or EMM410).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to design and implement proactive and reactive strategies that inform classroom management plans;
  • be able to describe positive school and classroom ecologies with reference to physical, social/emotional, and intellectual development and explain their implications for learning and behaviour;
  • be able to identify, apply and reflect on theoretical models to create effective learning environments and interpersonal relationships with children, parents/care givers and communities;
  • be able to apply a clear knowledge of the legal and practical requirements designed to ensure student and teacher safety in the classroom;
  • be able to plan and implement a variety of classroom management strategies to inform a sequence of lessons appropriate for a range of diverse learning needs; and
  • be able to critically evaluate current educational theory, policy and personal experiences to formulate and revise professional teaching goals prior to, during and after professional experience.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Placement requirements and expectations
  • Professional learning & writing teaching goals and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to begin a portfolio
  • Code of conduct and legal and practical requirements of teachers
  • Characteristics of primary school aged learners
  • Characteristics of positive learning environments including engagement, curriculum and inclusion and participation
  • Proactive and reactive theories of classroom management
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication to support student engagement
  • Strategies for managing challenging behaviours and bullying
  • Intra-personal awareness of self as a teacher
  • Reflecting on the professional experience

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 25 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

The subject has an embedded professional experience requiring 25 days of attendance in a primary school. During this experience students will focus on proactive and reactive strategies for managing positive classroom environments and the use of effective verbal and non-verbal communication to support the learning needs of a diverse range of students.
