ESS423 Designing and Managing the Inclusive Learning Environment (8)

This subject provides a context for managing student behaviour in inclusive settings. The content of this subject is anchored in research from the Applied Behaviour Analysis literature and is focused on the design of interventions for individuals with challenging behaviours. The subject focuses on individual student behavioural needs in relation to ecological, cognitive and behavioural theories and the way the principles and practices associated with individual planning can be anchored in classroom and school-wide approaches to supporting positive social and academic behaviour.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to develop an individual behaviour plan for students in inclusive settings (using case studies from their own settings);
  • be able to use information from various stakeholders to complete a functional analysis/ (FBA or ABC) form and analyse the antecedents and consequences of inappropriate behaviour;
  • be able to describe, prioritise and target inappropriate behaviour;
  • be able to choose and deploy an appropriate system for observing and recording behaviour;
  • be able to take hypothetical data for prioritised behaviours over 3-5 days and provide a summary of the results that can be used to justify the criteria in a performance objective;
  • be able to write performance objectives for new target behaviours;
  • be able to describe potential positive and negative reinforcers to use to encourage a target behaviour;
  • be able to plan stimulus and response generalisation of target behaviour;
  • be able to devise methods to accommodate reduction of inappropriate behaviour; and,
  • be able to build a position on the continuum of behavioural strategies available to reduce inappropriate behaviour and justify their position.
