GEO513 River Hydrology and Geomorphology (8)

This subject provides a comprehensive grounding of the major concepts in river hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology. Students will gain knowledge about flow hydrology, hydraulic behaviour, landforms and sedimentary deposits of rivers. Practical topics include the identification and description of distinctive landforms, sediments and types of flow associated with rivers, as well as methods in analysing hydrological data and report writing. The concepts and theory are woven into case studies to develop understandings of the effects of natural flood events and river regulation on the flow regime of rivers, especially those in the Murray-Darling Basin. On completion, students will possess knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology of rivers, some fundamental field observation and data analysis skills, and be able to critically apply this knowledge to key river management issues.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the key terminology, concepts and theory underpinning river geomorphology, river hydrology and channel hydraulics;
  • be able to identify and describe the distinctive landforms, sediments and types of flow associated with rivers;
  • be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the geomorphology and hydrology of a selected Australian river system and apply this knowledge to other river systems;
  • be able to apply their knowledge and skills in river hydrology and geomorphology to interpret hydrologic data and discuss the effects of flow on river systems;
  • be able to interpret and communicate the findings of a field study clearly and coherently within a river management context;
  • be able to critically apply their knowledge of river hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology combined with judgement and problem solving skills to some key river management issues
