This subject requires students to critically analyse organisational responses to a specific area of human service activity and associated social policy. The subject will develop students' understanding of the policy process and its contribution to the historical and contemporary service development in the chosen area of interest. Students will acquire a capacity to critique and influence policy development and implementation.

  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the relevance of such knowledge to contemporary policy and service development in an area of human service work or social policy (which they have studied)
  • be able to demonstrate capacity to contribute to policy and service development in an organisational context at local, regional and/or international levels
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to critique existing policy and service frameworks in an area of human service work or social policy (which they have studied)
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to contribute to the revision and construction of innovative policy and service responses to existing or emerging issues in an area of human service work or social policy (which they have studied).

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

- Principles of social policy development: Rights, Justice, Equity - Policy development and review processes in public and non-government contexts - Contemporary policy and service responses in an area of human service work or social policy on the basis of gender, culture, race/ethnicity, dis/ability and disadvantage - Organisational and community based strategies for innovative policy and service development in an area of human service work or social policy - Engaging in national and global responses for innovative policy and service development in an area of human service work or social policy
