Students will systematically study the parties, processes and outcomes of Australias industrial relations system, paying particular attention to the intersection with an organisation's strategic goals.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply specialised knowledge to solve complex problems relating to the Australian industrial relations system and the interrelationships among the parties and processes in the system;
  • be able to synthesise and apply theoretical frameworks and scholarly research to critically analyse issues relating to the practice of industrial relations in Australia;
  • be able to employ academic writing and information literacy skills to produce robust, well-supported argument related to industrial relations issues;
  • be able to critique and appraise ideas and perspectives of other students by creating and sharing information and knowledge in online moderated spaces;
  • be able to communicate specialised industrial relations knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences; and
  • be able to produce informed, relevant and well-communicated business advice and/or research papers relating to industrial relations issues.

  • Employment relations - an introduction
  • Theoretical frames and corporate industrial relations strategy
  • Business environments and implications for industrial relations strategies
  • Role of the State in Australian employment relations
  • Management industrial relations strategies and business goals, including the role of HR information systems in workplace strategies
  • Management responses to statutory regulation
