This subject is designed to provide a theoretical foundation for the contribution that training can be expected to make towards the development of the performance capabilities of management and employees. These performance capabilities will form the basis for the development of sustainable competitive advantage. Training and retraining will be necessary when an organisation shifts to a strategy requiring different skills, competitive capabilities, managerial approaches and operating methods.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss the relationship of competencies and capabilities to the development of competitive advantage (Topic 1);
  • be able to discuss the place of people in developing these competencies and capabilities (Topic 1);
  • be able to discuss the importance of management development in providing competitive advantage (Topic 2);
  • be able to explain the effect that the new employment relationship is having on career management (Topic 3);
  • be able to discuss the role of HRD in the management of diversity (Topic 4);
  • be able to discuss the role of HRD in the development of nonstandard workers (Topic 5);
  • be able to identify the benefits of mentoring (Topic 6);
  • be able to discuss the benefits of coaching (Topic 6).
