HSS401 Humanities and Social Science Honours Project/Dissertation (32)

This is a research subject in which the student writes a dissertation on a topic approved by an appointed supervisor, showing awareness of scholarly debate and involving critical analysis of relevant materials in at least one of the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. The dissertation should demonstrate the student's capacity to assemble material, argue a case at an advanced level, and demonstrate critical thinking and interpretive judgement in developing new understanding in their field. The dissertation is written over two sessions and is to be a minimum of 15,000 words in length.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to demonstrate advanced competence in research methods appropriate to their chosen topic

  • be able to plan and execute project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence
