IKC200 Contemporary Indigenous Australian Realities (8)

This subject has been designed in module format to provide students with knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues which are of interest to Indigenous Australian people. Students will reflect on their own standpoints as they explore the topics and Indigenous perspectives will be prioritised throughout this exploration. Students will explore the colonial foundations of a relevant discipline and will apply decolonising practices as a way to contribute to a more socially just society.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to examine the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples' contemporary experiences through an exploration of standpoint;
  • be able to outline a range of contemporary circumstances which impact on Indigenous Australians;
  • be able to analyse the links between contemporary circumstances as the trans-generational legacies of colonisation;
  • be able to identify ways to activate human rights and contribute to social justice both individually and professionally in ways which are informed by Indigenous Australian perspectives; and
  • be able to explore the colonial foundations of a relevant discipline and apply decolonising practices.

  • Standpoint Review
  • Decolonisation principles
  • Exploration of a range of contemporary circumstances
  • Colonial foundations of, and Indigenous Australian perspectives on, the professions
  • Decolonising practices
  • Human Rights and Social Justice
  • Diverse Indigenous Australian perspectives on equal rights
