This subject introduces students to the broad range of technologies and approaches employed in the provision of reference services in the current environment. It also develops students' understanding of how to evaluate such services and present this evaluation to management. Students are required to further develop their web creation skills, in conjunction with their understandings of virtual reference service concepts, to create a digital information service based on a real-life scenario.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of online information sources, services and systems;
  • demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of reference service provision, incorporating information literacy instruction and evaluation of sources and services; and
  • be able to develop a digital information service suitable for a defined audience.

This subject will cover the following topics:

- Reference services concepts (traditional through to the current environment); - Virtual reference services; - Evaluation of reference service provision; - Digital information services (including design, service provision, usability and evaluation).
