INF521 Literature and Other Resources for Children and Young Adults (8)

This subject provides a broad overview of literature and other resources for children and young adults from a public librarian's perspective. This subject traces the development of literature and other resources paying particular attention to the technological, cultural and social influences that have shaped this development. A range of genres and formats are explored and attention given to new and emergent trends in reading and engagement with materials and formats. The role that public libraries and librarians play in these trends will be discussed. The subject also explores the role of the library in literacy development and promoting engagement with reading for pleasure and recreation.

  • be able to integrate support for literacy and language development into public library programs for children and young adults;
  • be able to evaluate and apply a broad range of literacies;
  • be able to select and use a wide variety of literature and resources, authors and creators, and genres and formats for children and young adults;
  • be able to apply criteria to critically evaluate and select literature and other resources for children and young adults for programs and collections; and
  • be able to assess the issues and concerns associated with the access and provision of materials in multiple formats for children and young adults.

  • Historical context, developments and materials production in literature and other resources
  • Trends and impact of social, cultural and technological factors
  • Survey of literature and resources for children and young adults
  • Criteria, strategies and processes for selection and evaluation of literature and other resources
  • Developments in reading and materials formats, literacy and literacy support
  • 21st century literacies and literacy development relevant to public library programs
  • Promotion of literature and multiple format resources within the library program for engagement and recreation
