ISL331 Advanced Study of Tafsir (Qur'anic Exegesis) Literature (8)

This subject exposes students to different Quranic exegeses. It also includes development of different forms of exegeses; it will help students to see how Muslims have benefitted from the Quran. It will also consider the different ways in which the Quran has been interpreted as a source of understanding and implementation of Islamic jurisprudence and theology. It will explore traditional and contemporary interpretations of the Quran in the Islamic world and the West. It presents example passages from each classical exegetical works to show how they complement each other.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the major Qur'anic exegetical types and works
  • be able to analyse and evaluate exegetical methodology by studying selected passages from a range of exegesis works covering various exegesis genres
  • be able to demonstrate critical ability to deduct theological, legal and spiritual meanings from the Qur'anic verses by following exegetical methodology
  • be able to critically relate multiple meanings of the Qur'an in terms of how it is a source for multiple Islamic disciplines
  • be able to critically articulate theological, legal and spiritual knowledge and insights inherent in the Qur'an for everyday life
