This subject provides an introduction to information and communication technology concepts that underpin the use of information technology in our increasingly complex societies. Key technologies and associated issues are dealt within an educational context. It places particular emphasis on how the technology supports information processes so that from the level of an individual to that of a global society, one is able to effectively use that technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to interpret, summarise and explain functions and recent developments in common hardware and software components;
  • be able to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge of internet and web based applications and reflect critically on their utility in an educational context;
  • be able to investigate, analyse and synthesise legal, educational and ethical issues relating to communication networks and social networking;
  • be able to identify and evaluate a range of website development strategies and be able to identify data types appropriate for a range of web based purposes;
  • be able to understand the proposition of a digital divide and attribute causal factors, investigate and outline future technological based solutions;
  • be able to justify and interpret propositions regarding the impact of mobile computing devices and the implications for security, data integrity and privacy.
