This subject will enable students to understand the investigative, content and structural expectations of journalism created in non-news forms. Through creation of longform, feature, documentary and/or narrative journalism, students will develop skills to make in-depth, engaging, narrative-driven reportage for contemporary audiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically examine the characteristics that distinguish 'non-news' journalism from 'news' formats
  • be able to apply different styles of longform journalism to reporting practice
  • be able to investigate for and create reporting content of substance, depth and breadth across the range of major media platforms
  • be able to apply narrative principles to in-depth and longform journalism
  • be able to apply journalism longform narrative techniques to incorporate visual and audio elements in the creation of rich media content

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Journalism of breadth and depth across platforms: contemporary and historical examples of good practice
  • Analysis and critique, using key literary, writing and film theory and contemporary practice to explain the purposes and power of sustainably engaging journalism forms
  • Principles of narrative and story-telling applicable to feature, documentary, current affairs and book-length journalism
  • Methods and format conventions for creating engaging longform reporting across major publishing platforms
  • Application of investigative and other modes of inquiry for creating reporting content of substance, depth and breadth
  • Longform storytelling techniques incorporating vision and sound
