JST135 Introduction to Policing (B) (8)

This subject is for students who enter the Diploma of Policing Practice with graduate status. It combines some core themes (of police organisation, culture and reform; police powers) with a police station placement, and synthesises others (the ethical dimensions of police work; imbalances of power and how these can affect police/citizen interactions) through the study of cases concerning drug use and street offences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • identify police powers to be used in specific situations;
  • describe the structure of the Police Service;
  • compare theory on police culture to observed police practice;
  • explain the social context for drug and street offences;
  • identify ethical issues arising from specific policing situations;
  • identify institutional mechanisms to enhance ethical conduct;
  • apply a model of communication in a conflict situation;
  • describe barriers to communication in police work.
