This subject will address the ethical dimensions of investigative practice in such a way that students can focus on their own specific spheres of professional practice. Included will be ethical issues in relation to the use of whistleblowers, the use of forensic evidence, and competing investigative outcomes.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to conceptualise the ethical dimensions of investigative functions, both in general and in their specific professional domain
  • be able to critique, with others, the main ethical issues concerning investigations within their own professional domain
  • be able to recognise and frame relevant problems of occupational practice in ethical terms
  • be able to apply ethical considerations to problems of professional and organisational practice

This subject will cover the following topics:

- investigative ethics - justice, equality and investigation - investigative outcomes: law, morality, justice - ethical issues in relation to whistleblowers - ethical issues in the use of intelligence - ethical issues in profiling and investigative psychology - ethical issues re the use of forensic evidence - ethical issues in investigative techniques
