International Studies (China) is a unit that aims to provide students with the wherewithal to engage in social and business interactions in Chinese contexts. The unit examines Chinese language, culture and history from the perspective of providing a basis for understanding China's present and future place in the international business environment. The unit also requires students to demonstrate the capacity to identify and assess Australia?China business opportunities. Central to achieving the unit's objectives are a two-week group study tour of China and interactions with Australian companies doing business in China.

The subject is restricted to students enrolled in courses originating from Rural Management on the Orange campus. Other students should consult with their Course Co-ordinator prior to seeking enrolment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to:
  • Demonstrate conversation ability in Mandarin language to a travel survival level (e.g. greetings, introductions, counting, seeking directions, purchasing, etc).
  • Write some simple Mandarin characters correctly.
  • Exhibit appropriate etiquette for participating in social and business settings with Chinese people (e.g. introductions, banquet behaviour, gift giving, etc).
  • Identify and discuss the key cultural values exhibited in contemporary Chinese society.
  • Discuss the significance of the Chinese dynasties on the development of China.
  • Explain the impact of the 19th century trading activities of European nations with China and their effect on China today.
  • Analyse and describe the events and forces that led to the fall of the last Chinese Dynasty and the subsequent emergence of the republican movements.
  • Critically appraise the political, social and economic impact of significant modern Chinese leaders and the Chinese Communist Party.
  • Identify and discuss the key issues confronting the Chinese Government today and articulate a view of the outlook for China in the 21st century.
  • Identify and discuss the ramifications of China's moves towards a market economy and entry into the World Trade Organisation.
  • Describe and discuss living conditions in urban and rural China and reflect on differences with Australian lifestyles.
  • Identify the challenges and opportunities for conducting business in China.
  • Demonstrate a process for researching and evaluating China?Australia business opportunities.
