This subject instroduces students to academic writing skills through the critique of concepts central to modern nursing practice. Topics covered include health and nursing that have pertained historically and in current literature and practice; and the function of the World Health Organisation and primary health care delivery of nursing care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to research, plan and write an academic essay effectively;
  • be able to describe and analyse the factors which have impacted on the development of nursing;
  • be able to describe and discuss philosophical positions which have been influential in the development of nursing practice;
  • be able to identify strategies which nurses can employ to enhance the image of nursing and improve professional status;
  • be able to discuss the role of the World Health Organisation;
  • be able to identify global initiatives to improve health;
  • be able to discuss key issues impacting on nursing in the 21st Century; and
  • be able to describe and discuss the role of nurses in implementing strategies to improve health status.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

Module 1: Developing Academic Writing Skills *Understand and apply the principles of formal academic writing. *Understand the principles that underpin the concepts of critical thinking and reflection. Module 2: Historical developments in Nursing * Review of the history of nursing. * Discuss the current issues in relation to the status of nursing in the 21st Century. Module 3: Primary Health Care * The role of governments in the delivery of primary health care services. * Function of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation. * Relevant primary health care and health promotion initiatives. * The role of the nurse in the delivery of care in a primary health care framework.
