NUT324 Community Nutrition and Dietetics (8)

This subject examines the theory and practice of clinical nutrition and assessment relevant to the delivery of effective nutrition programs to community groups. Building upon the principles of effective nutrition education, students will be required to plan and to carry out a community nutrition program. This subject will involve a four week placement within a community setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Understand and apply the basic principles and models of development and evaluation of nutrition programs in a community setting;
  • Apply the knowledge of intervention strategies for community and public health settings;
  • Undertake a needs assessment for small groups as a basis to develop program goals;
  • Identify issues which influence the nature of, access to and effectiveness of, community nutrition programs;
  • Compare and contrast dietary advice for different population groups;
  • Design a survey/ questionnaire suitable for nutrition education purposes;
  • Demonstrate skills in planning, implementing and evaluating a group education session.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

The principles of community nutrition education programs: planning (e.g., health issue, target group, stakeholders, aims, objectives, performance indicators, resources needed), implementation and evaluation (of process and impact) Factors affecting the success of community nutrition programs in achieving sustainable outcomes Defining the community, needs assessment stages, the linkages between community dietitians and other community services/ organisations
