PHS307 Fundamentals of Physiotherapy Clinical Experience (8)

'Fundamentals of Physiotherapy Clinical Practice' enables Physiotherapy students to undertake a five week workplace learning experience. The purpose of this clinical placement is to: enable students to further develop their skills in clinical reasoning; critically appraise and apply knowledge in the workplace setting; further develop skills in self-appraisal of their professional practice; and develop knowledge of their professional practice responsibilities. Students enrolling in this subject will be expected to have a substantive level of knowledge and practical skills in cardio-respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological and paediatric physiotherapy practice. Knowledge and skills developed in PHS307 will be foundational to, and pre-requisite for, workplace learning in the final year subject PHS401: Physiotherapy Clinical Practice Competency.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply knowledge and skills in acute care, musculoskeletal, neurological and/or paediatric physiotherapy practice
  • be able to plan and apply a range of physiotherapy assessment and evaluation techniques using tests, tools and outcomes relevant to physiotherapy
  • be able to demonstrate and articulate sound clinical reasoning processes which explore, explain and analyse assessment findings
  • be able to safely and effectively implement physiotherapy interventions relevant to acute care, musculoskeletal, neurological and/or paediatric physiotherapy practice
  • be able to locate, evaluate and use evidence-based information to inform decision making and develop and guide their own knowledge, learning and practice
  • be able to plan safe, effective, culturally responsive and client-centred physiotherapy intervention
  • be able to demonstrate skills in professional, ethical and legal behaviour appropriate to physiotherapy practice
  • be able to accurately record physiotherapy assessment findings, outcomes and decisions and communicate them effectively to all stakeholders
  • be able to reflect on professional practice and plan professional development
  • be able to engage in safe, effective and collaborative interprofessional practice

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Workplace learning in any one of, or a combination of, the following areas of practice: acute care physiotherapy practice; musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice; neurological physiotherapy practice; paediatric physiotherapy practice
  • Clinical placements will be offered in a diverse range of settings including but not limited to: hospitals; community based facilities; schools based services; outpatient settings.
  • Clinical reasoning processes
  • Critical appraisal of knowledge and skills
  • Application of knowledge and skills in the workplace
  • Self-appraisal of professional practice capabilities
  • Professional practice roles and responsibilities

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 25 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students will be required to travel to workplace learning sites for a period of 5 weeks and will be responsible for their accommodation and transportation costs. 

Students undertaking this 5 week placement "Fundamentals of Physiotherapy Clinical Practice" will be expected to have a substantive level of knowledge and practical skills in cardio-respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological and paediatric physiotherapy practice. Workplace learning in this subject will provide students with the opportunity to develop sound clinical reasoning processes, apply and critically appraise knowledge obtained in the workplace setting, develop skills in self-appraisal of their professional practice and develop professional practice awareness and responsibilities. Skills developed in PHS307 will be foundational and pre-requisite to workplace learning undertaken, and assessed in PHS401.
