PHS406 Advanced Preparation for Physiotherapy Practice (8)

This advanced level subject will extend students' knowledge and skills in specialist areas of physiotherapy practice. This subject will facilitate an integrated approach across the three principal domains of clinical practice. Students will develop advanced clinical knowledge and skills in acute care, rehabilitation and community physiotherapy, and will apply this knowledge and skills in the creation of a professional development portfolio. Students enrolling in this subject will be expected to have significant knowledge and clinical experience in the core areas of physiotherapy practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to advocate for physiotherapy that is supported by evidence based practice, including best available research evidence

  • be able to justify physiotherapy options to manage a client's presenting problems
  • be able to demonstrate adaptive, respectful and responsive communication (in all forms) to reflect the purpose, context, culture, literacy, ethical, legal and/or professional requirements of the task or interaction
  • be able to create and present an effective digital presentation directed at physiotherapy colleagues
  • be able to locate, evaluate, use and integrate evidence-based information to inform decision making, and develop and guide their own knowledge, learning and practice

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Acute physiotherapy practice - burns; trauma; hand pain and injury
  • Rehabilitation physiotherapy practice - spinal cord injuries; occupational health
  • Community physiotherapy practice - women and mens' health; advanced musculoskeletal care; lymphoedema management; aged care; disability

Special Resources

Outsourcing of external/specialist clinicians/business professionals. Higher lecturing rates may be required and travel, accommodation when requested/required.
